Building Bridges for Black Entrepreneurs in Staten Island

The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Staten Island, but so are the significant challenges that minority business owners face. On September 12, 2025, Jones Strategy & Consulting Group had the privilege of partnering with the Richmond County Black Minority Chamber of Commerce to host a roundtable discussion at the College of Staten Island. The event, born from a desire to address the real-world issues facing Black entrepreneurs and a conversation with one of our sponsors the National Black Chamber of Commerce, revealed both the profound need for support and the incredible resilience of this community.

This event was a pivotal moment for the Richmond County Black Minority Chamber of Commerce (BMC), serving as a powerful kickoff for its recent rebranding and renewed commitment to community engagement. The Chamber is actively working to elevate its presence and become a more visible and proactive force for positive change on Staten Island. By organizing this roundtable, BMC demonstrated its dedication to not only providing resources but also creating a vibrant, supportive network where Black and minority business owners can connect, share experiences, and thrive together. This event is a clear signal that the Chamber is focused on tangible action and a more active role in empowering the local economy.

Jones Strategy & Consulting Group and the Richmond County Black Minority Chamber of Commerce brought together 19 business owners for an open dialogue. The conversation was honest, raw, and incredibly moving. Participants openly shared their biggest hurdles, which echoed a common theme: a need for greater access to finances, community, and understandable resources. These are not just business problems; they are systemic barriers that require a collaborative solution.

The support shown that day was a testament to what's possible. Speakers from the New York Small Business Development Center (NYSBDC) and Western Governors University (WGU) provided more than just words, they offered tangible help. Joe Botegga of NYSBDC gave out his card and offered free consultations, a direct lifeline to those struggling to navigate the complexities of small business. Meanwhile, Dr. K.L. Allen from WGU not only motivated the crowd but also secured a generous donation to cover subscriptions for eight attendees, directly investing in their growth.

This event was more than just a meeting; it was a powerful exchange of energy and ideas. The attendees were so engaged that they stayed for an extra 40 minutes just to network, and they requested a second event before the first one even ended. The palpable enthusiasm confirms that entrepreneurs in Staten Island aren't looking for handouts, they are actively seeking connection and direction. They are hungry for help, and they are ready to build a stronger community together.

The success of this roundtable proves that by bringing together the right people and resources, they can help dismantle barriers and empower the local economy from the ground up. This is not just about business; it’s about mental health, community wealth, and the future of Staten Island. The firm looks forward to continuing this vital work and proving that when they support minority business owners, the entire community thrives.
